When someone asks you what you think of a guy you've never heard of, it's okay to ask who he is instead of trying to play smart.

But also, if you're explicitly told that they're a world war II era political leader that fought against the Soviet Union and committed crimes against Jews, probably safe to say that you denounce them.

a world war II era political leader

this puts him at 77 years old at the youngest plausible age, but "political leaders" are probably at least 40 so I'd guess we're talking about a 97+ year old person. I didn't watch the interview, but did this person present themselves as old or was this person presented as any generic 30-60 year old person?

Because the idea that Stephen King talked to someone presenting themselves as if they were 40 but credentializing themselves like they were almost 100 years old is pretty hilarious.

Nah, he thought he was talking to Zelensky, and the person posing as Zelensky described Bandera and King was like "Both you, Zelensky, and this old WW2 era Nazi you like so much, 'Bandera' are super rad dudes."

Counterpoint: not if your ego is huge and fragile. Then you must pretend and get owned.

It's so funny to ready kremlin bots accusations of working with hitler. Like it was not russia, who signed Molotov-Ribbentrop pact and attacked Poland as an allies with Hitler FFS

Bandera is a Ukrainian hero who fought against the occupation of the USSR and Germany, and then sat in a German prison for the struggle for the independence of Ukraine. russians did not like him because of the struggle for the independence of Ukraine

Ukraine is a neo Nazi country and I’m tired of pretending that it’s not :youre-awful:

Allies are when you dont shoot at one another while securing a third party being able to retreat. I am sure those over a million Jews saved by the soviets actions really love it being seen as "attacking". Burn in hell, all of these fucking ****

I really want to know how these dudes get all these famous people on the line. I mean I buy that king had no idea who Bandera was. He is a lib. They aren't famous for their historical analysis and knowledge. Just cause he's good at writing a spooky tale doesn't mean he's good at other things.

It also raises the question. Why do famous people well known for one thing start thinking they should speak about other topics publicly. Like if I got famous for writing endless horror classics I'd just shut up publicly about everything else. I don't know shit.

I mean, I definitely want Danny Glover out there being cool. The problem is when the person in question doesn't do proper investigation or have good takes.

True. What I really mean is why do so many feel like you don't NEED to do investigation in anything once you reach a certain level

A lot of people want to use their platform for good. They just don't want to use "too much" of it for that and/or don't have a very coherent idea of what "good" is.

So... do you think is Steve embarrassed because he found out who Stepan Bandera was, or embarrassed because he wasn't actually on a phone call with *elenskiyyy? :thonk:

I wonder if maybe it's a bad idea for Americans to get involved in a conflict in a place where they have zero knowledge of the history and which they couldn't find on a map.

So they pretended to be Zelensky and they said that Bandera was a Ukrainian national hero who fought in WW2 against the Soviet Union who "accidentally" committed some crimes against the Jews, but that it was important to "keep him opposed to Putin and his propaganda."

End of the call King basically says that yeah founding fathers of countries often do bad stuff, like all the US founders who owned slaves, but they still did good stuff for the US and that both Zelensky and Bandera were "great men."

So even if he had zero understanding of who Bandera was to start with, they told him that this was a Nazi aligned WW2 leader who killed Jews and he immediately praised him.

      Video here.

There were videos circulating of some Russian hooligans calling up various high-profile people by pretending to be Zelensky.

Hot take: this is less “famous people are dumb” and more “western brain worms about fixated on Soviet atrocities while downplaying those of Anti-Soviet fuckheads has lead to this”
