It seems like the ultimate goal for everyone is to become a superhero so they never have to worry about money again

Same reason there was a morbius movie. Same reason there's a kraven the hunter movie coming.

At this point, with superheroes continuing to remain the lifeblood of the box office, there's a big problem for a lot of studios: all the IPs are basically held by Disney and Warner Bros at this point.

Spider-man and his spinoff characters, under Sony, are all that remains. They cut a deal to share spiderman for the MCU....so now the best they can manage is a bunch of D-list villains given field promotions to lead character of a tentpole franchise.

It's such a dumb strategy when they could just make the types of comic book movies Marvel and DC doesn't and have them be hard R action movies rather than just a camera whipping around CGI characters while they say shit like "So that just happened".

100%...but that's capitalism for you. The shared universe superhero proliferation is basically like all the world of warcraft clones of the past 20 years or various Facebook knockoff failures. You need to either do the same thing by an order of magnitude better...or you need a different hook.

I actually thought when the whole 'dark universe' thing was announced it presented a unique opportunity because the idea of a series of dark r rated horror films based on classic monsters in a shared universe was certainly a new idea...

And instead they just made them all goddamn PG-13 superheroes.

A shared universe cinematic brand of hard R movies is something you're probably not gonna get from Disney anytime soon...and Deadpool and Logan both proved the concept has an audience....yet nobody wants to take a bite???

ngl I fucking love that Sony is having to do this. It's resulting in films that have no business being made lol

Oh 1000%! Everybody has made morbius a meme already but I genuinely think it's been under discussed just how much dumb shit had to happen for that movie to be a thing.

The character of morbius himself literally owes his existence to the creation of the comics code authority and the fact that depictions of the undead were banned.

The perfect storm of Jared Leto getting recast as the joker combined with the sheer desperation of Sony to find a new tentpole leading them to dig up a d list character who hasn't been relevant and nobody has talked about since the 90s Spiderman tv series could only have happened in a time line as insane as ours.

lets them do live-action spiderverse stuff and they already had an animated film with "spiderverse" in the title
