~90% of Taiwanese trade with China is unaffected. The additional companies added make shit like Taiwan Freedom burger microwave meals.

Looks like this blustering is more about mainland Chinese politics than serious economic sanctions against Taiwan. Which wouldn't be good for either side tbh.

Taking Taiwan would be a nightmare militarily. 3/4 of the island is impenetrable mountainous jungle.

China is only one generation behind TSMC anyways. Invading Taiwan would gain them nothing.

Its always been a face issue. They never should have claimed Taiwan in the first place. They only did it because the KMT did it first (before they fled to Taiwan). Mao supported taiwanese independence from the Japanese colonizers.

I think its more than a face issue when an island right off the coast of your country being an US ally and part of US strategic island chains to contain your country

Taiwan does not have a choice but to ally with the US. Kazakhstan was neutral and they got hit with a coup attempt by the US. The alternative isn't even an alternative. They're literally threatening to invade every few months. How does a country ally with another country that says they'll invade anytime now?

And how is Taiwan containing China? Lmao. Chinese nationalists make fun of how shitty the taiwanese military is all the time. There are no US bases in Taiwan.

Taiwan does not have a choice but to ally with the US.

I appreciate reading some opinions from Taiwan but how much Parenti have you actually read? The US will lead your country toward destruction, does not care how many die as long as it deals a blow to China. This has been the case throughout history when a small country is caught in a tug of war between the US and a large power that threatens its economic hegemony. I can't help but feel your analysis is clouded by nationalism.

Peaceful unification with China is an alternative to the path that leads to certain conflict. You think the US will stop at trade agreements? You think the CIA isn't already involved in preparing anti-China separatist groups for violence? They don't care if Taiwan wins or has independence, they will send Taiwanese into proxy conflict as cannon fodder and sleep well knowing there are degrees of separation between nuclear powers.

China doesn't need Taiwan. It can play the long game and wait for it to fall in its orbit or not.

Any conflict with Taiwan could conceivably last decades. No one knows what kind of crazy underground bases are on the back end of the island.

What is the root of the situation Taiwan faced now, is it not because a bunch of civil wars losers fled to it, occupied it and allied themselves with US against China, so what China could have even done to allow for any sorts of independence without any guarantee that they are not tightly wound to US interests. You're talking like Taiwan is without blame here.

As for containing China, it's a PART of not the entire effort, any act of war against it will trigger response from US and allies and since China not gonna flatten it, it will act as a nuisance, holding out for reinforcements and deterring China deployments near it.
