:shocked-pikachu:
Apparently he rented a luxury home in the rich neigborhood. Alleged to have trafficed over 40K catalytic converters.
No link, infosec.
Fuckers stole mine a couple months ago. That sucked and it was $250 to get fixed. And now my car pollutes more and is louder. I hate it.
These rings are very organized. How about you steal from rich people instead of from my $3,000 car?
i've seen videos of it, they are in and out within 60-90seconds. i've seen people spend hella money and time trying to weld a shield around it but the Sawsall just cut right through it all. At least it was only $250, i've seen some people (Priuses) cost a hell of a lot more to fix
Yeah for sure i saw that priuses are expensive and targeted due to their high amount of valuable materials in the converter. I just had a sketchy shop weld me on a straight pipe with no converter just so my car didn’t sound like a damn Harley Davison.
Steal rich people’s converters. I need my car and can’t afford a $3000 repair
The guy who steals cat converters in my neighborhood is a former crackhead turned abusive pimp who eats fast food for every meal and keeps his dog locked up out back. But I guess it’s not like he runs a ring or anything. He’s just an amateur mechanic who knows his way around a scrapyard and the DMV
Is hexbear a place where we celebrate when thieves get caught now? I don't know this feels like the energy I'd expect in my local subreddit.
Most people who need to steal end up stealing from the poor it's tragic that doesn't mean communists celebrate them being sent through the carceral system
They can celebrate a some asshole no longer plaguing the community
I assumed the ringleader was some wealthy failson. But point taken I shouldn't repeat the local news or cops words uncritically. It's just my friends had their caty taken and its just added cost in these already costly times. Anyway the caty racket will continue, the rhodium & platinum must flow.
A comrade had their whole car stolen so they could rip out the cat. Apparently this is a big thing right now?
cats can have over $700 of rare materials and that's just the price when mine got stolen 15 years ago
I mean it's basically the opposite of good theft. Instead of hitting specifically the owning class (e.g. shoplifting, """"time theft""""), it hurts mostly ordinary people by fucking up their cars.
EDIT: Meant to say time theft, not wage theft, as in people "stealing" from employers by not working every minute they're paid for.
Catalytic converter theft hits people pretty hard (most states have emissions checks and you need one to pass most if not all of them, which means $$$ even with insurance. Also, you sound like you're driving a lawnmower for awhile till you can get it fixed), so I think it's okay to feel good that less of that is happening. :shrug-outta-hecks:
My personal feeling at the crime described was lol lmao gettit because I am too poor to own a car and angry at the world, but I understand the people reveling in the thief's misfortune are also angry at the world that yoinked their car part so all's fair
Yes? When the leader of an organized crime ring that's stolen tens of millions of dollars from mostly poor people gets arrested, that's good.
