Shanghai is 100% the weakest link in Mainland China when it comes to liberalism as we can see with the way the local Shanghai authorities completely fuck up their Covid response in an attempt to copy the West. But it has nothing to do with "social d-word," but more to do with its historical role as the Chinese city where all the Westerners flocked to when China was in the process of being colonized to the point where Shanghai had a defacto Chinatown. The Shanghai clique also plays a factor in this as well. And finally, plenty of Chinese people don't like Shanghai in the same way plenty of Americans don't like NYC or LA. It's mostly regional rivalry.
