    know it isn't really the main issue here, but the culture surrounding high school sports in america seems completely bonkers to me

      What's insane is that it can very likely aid a student in college admissions. I, for one, don't care about the "right to sport" in abstract, but participating in extracurriculars like sports can be very impactful to someone's life's trajectory in this way.

      It is and I remember kids moving to different states because their parents wanted them to have a better chance at getting a football scholarship. The parents are almost always more obsessed with it than their kid is.
