It's a special election, so she'll get a few months in office and then have to run again in November
Peltola, who is Yup’ik and turned 49 on Wednesday, will become the first Alaska Native to serve in the House
I think this is neat
She will be the first Democrat to hold the seat since the late U.S. Rep. Nick Begich, who was seeking reelection in 1972 when his plane disappeared. Begich was later declared dead and Young in 1973 was elected to the seat.
Peltola ran as a coalition builder while her two Republican opponents — Palin and Begich’s grandson, also named Nick Begich — at times went after each other. Palin also railed against the ranked voting system, which was instituted by Alaska voters.
Fountain of youth in Alaska confirmed?

Just calling your voter base stupid hogs who don't know what's good for them
"The issues are much too important for the
ChileanAlaskan voters to be left to decide for themselves."Henry KissingerSarah Palin
That entire plane crash is very 👁️ . There was another senator in the plane named Hale Boggs who was a) on the Warren Commission which investigated the JFK assassination and b) gave a speech on the floor of the house decrying the power the FBI and Hoover had at the time. And then he perished in an air crash and his body was never found...
The Democrats have now over-performed Biden's 2020 performance in all 6 special elections post-Dobbs in what's supposed to be a red-wave year. Are the Republicans really going to blow what should have been a lay-up midterms?
Its gonna be funny watching dems have to actuly pass some popular legislation
Doubt that'll be the lesson they learn from having wins handed to them for not trying
Special elections not taking place on election day are different, a lot less people vote in them. I wouldn't say their results are indicative of much.
Her main planks are wildlife preservation, abortion, and labor rights
it might be all rhetoric, i'm not familiar with her previous tenures heading the Kuskokwim River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission and on the Bethel city council.
for sure. but like in a certain sense the personal leanings of a candidate don't really matter nearly as much as their willingness to bite the hand when the opportunity presents itself, and it only does so very rarely. i suspect we'll only find out what she's really made of if she wins her reelection and the Dems feel like they have to bring her to heel.
as progressive as it gets in a neocolonial state lol
quote from the campaign trail:
But Peltola claims she does have a lot in common with her Republican opponents. She said they have common ground on national security, concern for the economy and the need for development projects.
“All three of us understand Alaska has to continue to pay its bills, and we are a resource extraction state,’ she said.
I'm still disappointed Santa Claus didn't make it past the primary.
