      surely suffering should never be wished on anyone. Self defence goes to use of violence to keep yourself and others safe but suffering is still a thing to minimise

                  yeah but that's all punitive justice gets you. Cruel punishments don't make anything better for anyone a focus on making sure people can't be a danger to others is more practical
