    They were arguing about whether or not the USSR should be a federation of different national republics or one big republic, if anyone cares. Stalin’s version won.

      Did Lenin want the USSR to have less territory? I know Lenin was instrumental in Finland's independence from what was previously Imperial Russian territory.

        Eh, as I understand it there wasn’t much choice. The Fins were pretty set on independence and had been semi-autonomous under the Tsar. The bolsheviks had bigger fish to fry at that time. Same reason B-L gave up so much territory.

      What’s the difference, if you or someone else doesn’t mind explaining? Like wasn’t the USSR a Union of Republics anyway?

        just the level and degree of autonomy. there was no way for re-constituting some independent national republics after the red army had just rooted out the whites fighting them in the periphery countries. theyd still be red & bound to each other for mutual security

        honestly in the west we might not even appreciate the difference, people here think the warsaw pact were in the ussr lol
