No, no, you see, because the swastika is a holy buddhist symbol and how dare you associate it with Nazis! (actual argument I have seen)

An exhaustive list of people who I tolerate that argument from:

          • Buddhists
          • Hindus

          That's it.

Sikhs and Jains also use it, so I should add those to the list. As far as I can tell Japanese maps use swastikas to mark out Buddhist temples, while Shinto shrines have a tori gate symbol.

Shinto is a folk religion that outdates Imperial Japan by centuries. I don't think it's necessarily fair to paint believers of Shinto with that wide of a brush for the exploitative distortions of State Shintoism. No more so than it is fair to paint Muslims with a broad brush for the bullshit ISIS uses Islam to justify.

Oh yeah, Japan as a whole is totally fine with being part of the Axis. To the point where it would probably make most Germans and Italians very uncomfortable.

Yeah, if your genocidal mass murdering world conquering empire allied with the Nazis you lose your swastika pass.

I know, right? Sartre was a sex pest and an asshole but he wasn't wrong about anti-semites/fash

“Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.”
