Made a small effortpost about this on Twitter:

Viewing Haz as a reactionary with ML aesthetic and Vaush as a reactionary with anarchist aesthetic, is a good take. I think the important thing is to not fixate on these reactionary figures too much. You can dunk on them a little as a treat. Vaush and Haz are mostly irrelevant. Even neolib Destiny has a much larger than both of them.
However, the Left does need figureheads. Most people spend a lot of time on social media and that is a good way to promote Leftism, with less discourse. "Just go outside and organize your community" is something that someone who never goes outside would say. The truth is that most communities outside of the internet are deeply reactionary.
Being a reactionary is the default position in many communities. Even the most uninvolved people in the community are going to actively work against Leftist organizing efforts. Popular opinions have to be changed for community organizing to even be possible. Leftist propagandists are extremely important, even online ones.
:hasan-ok-dude: but also :the-deprogram:
the deprogram needs to invite hasan on, it would be fucking amazing
I thought Vaush was bigger than destiny.
I don't know exactly. I try to avoid either of them. At a quick glance, Destiny only has like 25% more subscribers than Vaush, but Destiny's videos have way more views than Vaush's videos. Destiny dominates the reddit online drama subreddit, LSF. I see Destiny's community brigading other communities pretty frequently.
I guess your right.
As far as I know Destiny is much, much bigger than Vaush, but I don't care enough to look in to it.
My point isn’t that the general populace is somehow less reactionary than Vaush. My point here is that, en masse, social media in general and these political brands that it develops in particular create a strong bias towards not organizing. Acting like these things are a giant deal is a big part of the problem, which I think you agree with if I’m understanding you.
But I don’t understand what the quoted bit there means. Like, it’s too difficult so no one who’s tried it would encourage it? Organizing is boring, thankless, and rarely productive long-term. It’s also our only tool and it needs to be done.
The quote was a response to the sentiment that online Leftist figures are useless. I'm not certain that it is a sentiment that you have but I have seen other people on hexbear express this. The quote is meant to mean that organizing is hard because most people are reactionary but if normal people can be influenced through social media, then organizing can be made easier.
Vaush and Haz are reactionaries, which is why I think they should be ignored. It is correct to to say that they don't encourage organizing because they are reactionary.
On the other hand, we have online leftist figures, like Chapo and Hasan, that do promote organizing and have actually caused people to organize their workplaces and communities.
Normal people are more often reactionary because it is the default position, due to decades of brainwashing. Normal people spend a lot of time on social media. Social media is part of normal life now. If there are positive figures on social media promoting Leftist ideas, then normal people would hopefully absorb some of those Leftist ideas.
Organizing is important. Organizing is more important than online Leftist figures. Organizing is hard and organizing people who have reactionary beliefs is even harder. If normal people are less reactionary, then they are easier to organize.
Having Leftist figures on social media that promote Leftism in a positive way, with minimal discourse, should make organizing easier.
Ah yes. I agree with all that then. Thank you for clarifying.
