My friend had his house broken into and his guns were stolen, so I'm afraid of something like that happening and my guns being used in gang murders or something. Plus I rent a small space and I really don't want to haul a 700 lb gun safe into my small closet. And I'm not suicidal but I do get depressed sometimes.
I might get a gun someday, but it's low on my list of stuff to spend money on, just below a new gaming PC and an electric bicycle. Maybe a bolt-action rifle like a Mosin-Nagant?
Not saying there's no scenario in the next few years where a rifle would be handy, but a handgun is really the practical choice. If society is destabilized, you'll want personal protection, but there likely won't be a lot of "battles," or any situation where you'll have a clearly identifiable target that you'll need to hit from medium or long range. If you get a really good deal, or whatever, sure, but a semi auto rifle is much better for a beginner. Don't buy it because it matches your ushanka.
You can get a little fireproof safe for really cheap (they're even easy to bolt down if you have wood floors). And you should never tell anybody you have a gun that you wouldn't trust with a key to your house.
As for the depression, FWIW, I've never actually done it, but I have a friend I can leave my guns with if I feel like I shouldn't have them around. Just having the option has made all the difference for me.
