  • Definitely takes a little bit for your body to adjust. If you wash daily, you might want to wean yourself off of shampoo--less frequently/use less of it. And rinse on days you don't shampoo (hotter water will work better for breaking down the oils).

From there, the fancy shampoos that won't strip your hair won't seem that expensive considering you'll only need them very occasionally. I pretty much only use it before going to something formal like a wedding, or before a haircut.

  • I always laugh at the "Marxist professors" line from conservatives. Had to take literary theory as a prereq and there was only the briefest, most facile discussion of interpreting via a Marxist lens. This was the semester after I had waited two hours in line to vote for Obama in 08 and was super stoked that he won. The quick disillusionment in Obama combined with some arguments with that professor got me thinking about leftist issues.

Biggest argument was when she said that the wizard/muggle thing was about race. When I suggested it was about class (Rowling was famously poor, wizards have all the power, basically have their own world, look down on non wizards, even people who make it in on their merits like Hermione aren't really accepted, etc, and also British books are always about class), it clearly had never occurred to her, and she just flatly dismissed it.

Tl;dr: arguing about Harry Potter put me on the path to leftist politics.

  • I recently played whichever one had the Law and Order SVU guy in it, and it started with you exposing absolutely horrific crimes against humanity by the CIA, but then it turns out the real bad guys are the people trying to fight the CIA... because an AI is controlling them.

Never any talk of holding the CIA accountable for murdering a half a million (?) people.

Also, the guy who plays the player character is just a horrendous actor. Cringed every time he spoke.

  • Not saying there's no scenario in the next few years where a rifle would be handy, but a handgun is really the practical choice. If society is destabilized, you'll want personal protection, but there likely won't be a lot of "battles," or any situation where you'll have a clearly identifiable target that you'll need to hit from medium or long range. If you get a really good deal, or whatever, sure, but a semi auto rifle is much better for a beginner. Don't buy it because it matches your ushanka.

You can get a little fireproof safe for really cheap (they're even easy to bolt down if you have wood floors). And you should never tell anybody you have a gun that you wouldn't trust with a key to your house.

As for the depression, FWIW, I've never actually done it, but I have a friend I can leave my guns with if I feel like I shouldn't have them around. Just having the option has made all the difference for me.

  • I know there are a number of reasons why some people can't, but if it's possible to do disc replacement, you should. Down time is a little longer, but cost is actually similar and you keep most of the flexibility instead of basically losing the joint.

I've got three herniated discs in my neck from a car accident last year, probably getting the surgery before too long. Big issue is whether the car insurance will pay for it, shithole country etc.
