"For them to go backwards and not cast another [actor of color] kind of sucks," Leguizamo, who starred in the 1993 live-action version, of the upcoming animated movie.
John Leguizamo is saying mamma mia to the new “Super Mario Bros.” casting.

I do sometimes raise my eyebrows at the frequency that Black voice actors play the villains, though.
Like, even star wars (surprising because they managed it in a live action movie)
Black men just tend to have deeper voices
Deep voice = scarybad in movie
I mean, isn't that the same thing? Like, why are deep voices seen as scary?
Deep voice requires a large ribcage for that resonance, usually meaning a larger person, and bigger people are more intimidating

Bear in mind I'm just some asshole on the internet saying things that sounds like they make sense
I could be wrong about everything and probably am :very-smart:
Maybe Hollywood selects for large, tall black men with deep voices to be famous so they can have big evil intimidating black characters in their movies to intimidate people evilly with their bigness

I learned to speak from my chest because I hated my voice and I wanted to hit all the deep notes on Aerials

i mean to be fair, giancarlo esposito is the evil capitalist/authoritarian in EVERYTHING now
Recently learned he was in The Usual Suspects back in the day.
Except Giancarlo is a skinny aging bureaucrat and Bowser is a 300 lb dragon turtle.
This would have been the perfect voice role for a Jason Momoa or Dwayne Johnson, if you absolutely need a celebrity on the title card. Otherwise, get literally anyone who has a bit of reverb in their voice. Giancarlo's best work barely happens above a whisper. We're looking for Darth Vader not The Godfather.
(you're missing the joke, that browser is voiced by Jack Black, the white guy)
Oh shit. I did miss that. Well I got got.
I do still think it's pretty racist that Black voices are predominantly used as villains in cartoons, even if this isn't an example of that.
Lol yeah, you're definitely not wrong in general

I like the super Mario Brothers super show casting. Like, cast two Sicilians (or Italians) - or at least two Brooklyn -raised Italians.
