Mario is incredibly popular, but it's also very shallow (at least as far as most people know it). Kind of reminds me of the time Hollywood tried to adapt Tetris and that didn't go so great.
The real joy of Mario is playing it as a child (I've never met anyone who really likes Mario who got into it as an adult) and I'm not sure if that translates at all into a movie for all audiences.
