It was an okay game from what I played, but it wasn't something I was going to continue. The process was surprisingly easy to resolve given it was an eShop purchase.

I figured I'd pick it up again in the future if something changes.

What's the general consensus around here regarding gen 9?

The game was clearly rushed, and as with basically every Pokemon game beyond the first few, I find myself just sitting here thinking about how much better it could be with appropriate creative liberty given to the developers, as well as enough time to actually develop a game. The visuals - even aside from graphical glitches - are inexcusably bad.

It's still Pokemon though, and after skipped a couple generations I'm simply in a place to enjoy a game again. But I do so acknowledging that the game is not great, or even good really, and the franchise is doing a whole fuckload of heavy lifting to compensate for restrictive design and limited dev time.

I love Dudunsparce though, my doofy little baby - it is truly the perfect evolution. Overall the creature design is pretty good - aside from a few obvious misses just like every gen, there are some real standouts. Nymble / Lokix are really neat, for example.

Playing on emulator, I've been really enjoying it. I think I liked Legends: Arceus a bit better though, I'm gonna go back and play that some more when I finish with Violet. I love being able to have your 'mon auto battle while you explore, and have been doing it a ton. I love these characters, I love the new monster designs, I love the freeform pacing (even if there is very clearly a single intended path), and I'm surprised to say I love making sandwiches for my Pokemon.

That said I almost never play super polished AAA games, so when I see people complaining about jank I feel no empathy whatsoever. The visual quality is poor compared to other games in its class, but I play indie games that would have been laughed off the PS2 so I really don't mind how a game looks. One thing that does bother me is the continued insistence upon splitting the game in two despite the fact that that hasn't done anything good for the game's design since the 90s - another thing that bothers me is not having a national dex, which I am 100% positive they're doing on purpose because they want people to subscribe to Pokemon Bank (which is $5 per month for about 3 kilobytes of storage) and not because they want to make the games better.

I'm sympathetic to Game Freak's desire to remain a small dev team, but they should reign in their game concepts to match the team they have - a big open world like this was clearly beyond what they could deliver, and it's been obvious that they can't deliver it since Sword and Shield. The next game needs to have a more focused design, with a return to the linear routes and towns of previous games, where you can pack a ton of personality into the smaller spaces. You can still do an open-world design with that kind of map setup - fan games have played with that concept for ages and it sucks to see Game Freak take a good idea (tackle the story missions in any order) and marry it to a bad idea (big open areas filled with nothing but roaming mobs like it's an MMO).

Anyway, Pokemon Black/White 2 remains the best game in the main series, Pokemon Colosseum remains the best game in the franchise overall, The Pokemon Company needs to license more spinoffs.

They're already at 9 generations? Take it easy, Game Freak. Back in my day, 151 Pokémon was more than enough.

Most of the originals aren't transferable to the newer generations, so there's that. 🎉

Pokemon should be nationalized. Best game since gen 5. Performance is dogshit and a lot of pointless subtractions(where the fuck is set mode? I still don't know how breeding works, haven't got a single egg). Design wise a lot of winners. God I fucking hate pokemon, forever stuck in mediocrity.

I've been enjoying it but cannot deny that the performance issues are glaring and obvious. The graphics are at times glitchy and crazy low textures with clipping issues being a huge problem. It lags frequently as well. Also, compared to Legends: Arceus it's wildly more slow and restricted. Catching pokemon feels downright cumbersome compared to Legends. That being said, the battling system is night and day better than Legends aside from how slow it feels so I have been enjoying that part of Violet. If I could magically mash together Legends and Violet/Scarlet I would be thrilled

I havent played it yet. People on here seem to really like it but the performance is ass and there are some bugs. Will probably wait for some patches If I decide to pick it up.

How the fuck are you getting refunds on eShop purchases? I turn into an idiot when I'm on the eShop and I need a way to recoup my losses.

Go to the Nintendo website and get into a chat with a rep. I cited the game's quality issues (and not me being broke and needing the money back from my impulse buy).

I mean, there are a lot of complaints to be made, especially regarding performance and graphics, but I'm actually having a ton of fun with it anyway.

I'm glad. It's just something that bothers me enough personally. I'm trying to not be a downer about it around my friends who are enjoying it actually

Honestly, I haven't been to into pokeman ever since they went 3d. I think a lot was lost in the designs when ported over. I have been playing bootleg pokeman games like pokeman insurgence. I enjoy that they actually get hard at times as I most one shot everything in main line games.

Agreed on Legends as a template. It was flawed, but it was the better direction. Just throwing the PokeBall was such a dynamic change in resource gathering or starting battles

I've been playing it on my hacked switch and having fun with it, more than I did with Gen 8 at launch. There are big problems with framerate and performance, but it's alright.

I skipped gen 8 but was optimistic for 9. Just didn't work for me, ya know?
