like this is an actual thing that happens every world cup, like not even just a school thing everyone gets the brazilian games as a holiday, because people will call in sick or just not go to their work to see the yellow boys play the ball game
Bio:
Brit in São Paulo since 2010.
No shot she's lived in Brazil 12 years and is this surprised about this kind of reaction to a world cup.
To be fair this is probably their best chance since 1986. Such a stacked team.
Now watch Southgate play a 5-5-0 for the next game...
like if this was the first time she was around here i would get, like maybe this is the first time her son is old enough to be going to school just real weird to think because if you were here during the world cup in brazil you know WE DO THIS WE DID IT WITH TOURISTS IN OUR COUNTRY
it is generally same situation as a holiday so yeah, but depending on the schedule it is sometimes just you work until midday and then you are free for the rest of the day, and people on bars or places where people go to watch games generally work but they get extra pay for doing it and people who are going to bars are going to watch the game so you are watching the game too it is a weird case by case thing but i study at a federal uni in brazil and i have received a world cup holiday schedule from the minister of education on an email so it is a official thing it is really wild
Based.
We always managed to convince the teacher to put the game on the projector, whatever sport was being played by South Africa, be it soccer, rugby, cricket or the olympics.
i like that this is not a MBS thing this is literally KING SALMAN SEEING HIS BOYS WIN AND GETTING SO STOCKED HE DECLARED NATIONAL HOLIDAY
"Update: the king got the idea from MBS. this is very important."
Saudi Arabia delenda est.
Not a big football guy, but I honestly cannot imagine not watching a world cup game where my country plays. It is like the opposite of nationalism in some ways - which is weird considering how many people are dressed/painted like flags.
like the fun part about olympics and the world cup is being able to just have the dumb national pride in a situation where it doesn't really matter so much, like no war, it is just being proud of our ball boys doing the ball thing, it is important and we really want to get the big cup and put a new star on the jersey, and the world cup really means a lot to brazil, like we are both the most sucessful nation and the only nation to have played every single one, so it sucks when it doesn't happen but like we will get them next it is better than the other national zeal, which is the freaks who were in front of military HQ asking for a coup because they don't believe in the election
This is the ok kind of national zeal. Everyone who cheers for the team is included, even if you're from a different country and don't speak the language. It's beautiful and deserving of a national holiday.

the guys in india that support brazil and argentina RULE i love them
I can't imagine how obnoxious it must be to live in Brazil etc. if you don't give a shit about soccer
like 99% is pretty normal, if a brazilian team won a big tournament there might be a big impromptu party in their city, during the world cup it is a bit harder because people will talk more about footbal, but like when i was a teen i wasn't big into soccer and the fun thing about the world cup is that you get a free holiday every game and you don't need to watch it i used to play games and stay up late and have a cozy long sleep during the games when they were too early, and you get to go drink with your pals and barely pay attention to the game if you want it is just a really fun time, everyone is on a good mood as long brazil is doing fine on the world cup, there is of course a bias, i naturally trained to love the ball game, it is the culture, but it is one of the funniest times to be around in brazil, i once watched a game with a whole samba school drums division, it is the second secret carnival
Edit: just wanna add one of the weird events that sometimes happens during world cup matches, if you are on a deeply populated area like generally in big cities, and brazil is playing you might be able to hear everyone losing their mind like during the one in brazil, i heard like a whole street of 10+ floor buildings ROAR in euphoria, but people were really hyped for that one, like you could absolutelly know the result of a game simply by listening to people in a window but the level of this really varies depending on place and also how excited people are for the team but it is a bit obnoxious if you are not aware of it
So not all that different to our football/baseball/basketball shit then huh
yeah it just looks more intense because instead of some people really like the american football and other people being into the basketball, everyone is just a massive group of footbal fans (although like brazilians do enjoy sports in general it is just that footbal and the national team in particular is a part of the brazilian identity, like even to people who are not big football fans on a normal time might become hardcore supporters, and it is also why the effect of the 7x1 defeat to germany at home was actual trauma to the brazilian collective mind, that was our 9/11) like this was the reception flamengo got from getting one of their libertadores's cup wins and this seems pretty on par with a superbowl win reception for example
i guess if you hate it when other people are happy or excited about something then yeah, it would be pretty annoying
At my girlfriend's job they all agreed to schedule a totally legit "meeting" when today's match was played. At my job the bosses made it a common team building/social event and set up a big screen and bought snacks.
What country if you don't mind me asking?
South Africa got knocked out of qualifying by a nonsense Ghana penalty, it could have been us there 😭
Chile, we werent close to qualifiying and to be honest we would have been terrible there considering that we tied to Qatar a few weeks ago and they easily lost their first match
Oof. At least you won the Copa America with the golden generation.
To be fair, South Africa would have had to beat Nigeria to get into the world cup, even if we beat Ghana, and that would have been unlikely. South African football is not doing too well at the moment
it is SPORTS SEASON also like she was already done before i posted this as us brazilians had already found that tweet so this is not even a dunk as much of talking about this weird tradition
