You vote on election day and spend the rest of your time organizing. That is all I’m saying. Come election day, you vote for the Democrats. Why? Because they’re better (less bad) than the alternative. The democrats will not pass an anti-abortion or an anti-lgtb bill. The republicans will.

I don’t understand because I’m dumb, but how would this work in practice?

What happens if Biden snaps his fingers and the workers continue to strike anyway?

If I were in this union I’d just tell Biden to pound sand.

Pretty sure this means that the workers will no longer be protected by law from losing their jobs. If the union leaders condone the strike, they could go to jail. If the union doesn't condone the strike, this is a wildcat strike and the firm can sue the union if they don't expel the workers participating. Furthermore the government/firms will be less likely to engage in negotiations with the union if they go through with an unprotected strike.

If the striking workers are government employees, then there could be further reprisals (in some states it's illegal for government employees to go on strike, as government employees do not have a legally protected right to strike unlike those working in the private sector).

Basically, you always have a legal right to not go to work or to participate in a strike, but there are "protected" and "unprotected" strikes/union action. Workers who participate in a protected strike have certain legal protections over workers in unprotected strikes. Also, while it isn't illegal to participate in an unprotected strike, disrupting work or unlawful assembly could land strikers or union leaders in legal trouble.

I got all this through 30 mins of googling so if anyone knows more, or if I've said something incorrect, please correct me

Biden, a longtime labor ally, along with Labor Secretary Marty Walsh and other administration officials helped unions and management reach a tentative deal averting a freight railroad strike in September.

Pelosi said Tuesday the chamber could vote as soon as Wednesday on legislation to adopt the September tentative agreement and avert a possible rail strike.

After the meeting, McConnell expressed openness to backing the legislation, and told reporters “We’re gonna need to pass a bill.”

Biden and Congress are trying to force the unions to accept the September agreement that does not include paid sick days.

“You have workers all over this country who work for the railroads, people who are working at dangerous jobs in inclement weather, have zero paid sick leave. That is outrageous,” Sanders told reporters. “I think it’s incumbent upon Congress to do everything that he can to protect these workers, to make sure that the railroad starts treating them with the respect and the dignity that they deserve.”

Sanders would not commit to voting for or against the legislation, and did not answer when asked if he would object to moving the legislation quickly through the Senate. Any one member can delay a quick vote and potentially put off final action until after the December 9 deadline to avert a strike.

Bernie Sanders is taking the side of the unions. Sanders is opposed to forcing the unions to accept the September agreement, which does not include paid sick days.

I don't understand what you mean. Sanders is taking the side of the unions. The CNN article is trying to make him look bad but BMWED rail union is praising Bernie on twitter for his support.

Edit: So I thought he was holding the vote, which I perceived as accepting it, but he's the lone hold-out vote as of now. Hope to fuck he holds and makes it hard.

Marco Rubio is coming out against intervening in the strike. Of course it's wholly calculated and insincere; it will obviously sail through congress so the GOP is safe to have a few member do some performative populism. But I think it highlights the GOP's plan to try and steal away working class votes from the Democrats, and they're gonna succeed, too.

Broke: Not supporting American rail workers because you believe in non-interference.

Woke: Supporting American rail workers because you believe in their struggle.

Bespoke: Supporting American rail workers because your support will cause a knee-jerk sinophobic reaction, scuttle all negotiations, and result in a strike that will cripple America.
