I'm leaning towards FF6, but IDK, playing through Chrono Trigger again RN.

Cruel question, but I know my answer, and it's Chrono Trigger. There are very few RPGs that can beat Chrono Trigger

Chrono Trigger 100%. FF6 is a very good game, don't get me wrong, but Chrono trigger is a contender for best game of all time for me, so I don't even think it's close.

Chrono trigger because it's the only one I played because it's the only game anyone ever needs to play. Video games could have just stopped there.

FF6 is a fantastic game, but Chrono Trigger is my preference.

Story is probably the most important thing for me between these two and the story in CT just hit so much harder for me. There are so many ridiculously tragic parts in CT that when combined with music, made me cry.

    CT Spoilers
    • Robo being destroyed by his fellow robots

    • Lucca and her mother

    • Glenn watching Cyrus being killed and then being turned into Frog.

    • Azala/Reptites death

    • Chrono getting annihilated

    • Robo working the desert for 400 years

FF6 has two moments that really brought me to tears, but none that could overshadow CT fully.

Chrono trigger has better story and music, but it's pretty short at about 16 hours. And very easy

Chrono Trigger has tighter game design and a smoother play experience. But FF6 has more complex story themes and gameplay mechanics which give it greater replayability, so that's the one I'd take with me to a deserted island, even though I think that, in the end, CT is the superior game.

I am not a guy who "prefers" older RPGs, but CT was one of the few I've played that I went on to finish, so I give it to that one over FF6 which gets pretty boring pretty quick IMO. It's got more interesting writing, characters, combat and just about everything else.

I love both. They're not just classics but masterpieces that really expanded my idea of what a game could be. Chrono Trigger is easily a contender for best game of all time. My preference is really hard to answer though. Probably FF6 but its obviously close. First rpg i ever played, and honestly after that i just wanted more squaresoft rpgs.

I will add though that this question is Super Mario RPG erasure. Its some of squaresofts best work when they were at the top of their game and one of the best SNES games. Especially love the secret boss Culex whose theme was a redone boss theme from FFiv.

I like FF6 better (atmosphere! wacky combat mechanics! sidequests!) but I think CT is better constructed overall, and CT would be the one I'd recommend to people who want to get into RPG gaming, possibly even the game I'd recommend for people to get into games in the first place.
