I hear this regularly. I'm not seeing any evidence of it, beyond the knee-jerk "Miranda's politics suck" crowd. His songs are easily as catchy as anything a Disney movie would pump out. They're emotionally moving, technically clever, and they clearly draw an audience. If its not your thing, that's cool. But its purely contrarianism to point at The Big Popular Thing and say "Uh, everything about this is bad, aktuly".
People with shitty politics can make good art. Just look at Kanye.
I think it's a relevant point to make. Not as an effort to convince someone that they should actually change their mind about Hamilton, but rather to have a more realistic understanding of how shitty ideology is transmitted and maintains longevity
I'm honestly not trying to be contrarian, I went into it expecting to like it despite all the hate it got. Maybe it was just that it was so far from the genre of rap I normally listen to. The pacing of the songs/story come off as weird to me too. The stage performance was on par though.
Its definitely more of a 1980s School House Rap than 2020s Sound Cloud Rap. But half the lyrics of "My Shot" could easily end up in a Drake album. The themes of love and ambition and violence cut across the genre. Nobody is going to confuse the rhythm or pacing of a song from Hamilton with Wicked or My Fair Lady.
As a musical category, its rap. And if we're using "what people enjoy listening to" as a gauge of quality, its good.
I enjoy Scroobius Pip and Tech N9ne so yeah drake isn't exactly what I'm looking for, My Shot though I did like. I guess I was expecting more on the rock side of rap then the disney side being people were talking about Hamilton like it was the next Le Mis not The Lion King.
I mean, I never really got the appeal of Le Mis, so... shrug. And I'll happily admit there was a bunch of romantic filler which sounds - at best - like R&B.
But, like, anyone who says "Washington on your Side" isn't quality rap music... I mean, come on. If someone had done a Stalin/Trotsky play with this kind of music, Hexbear would be all over it.

Never in a million fucking years thought I would see anyone defend Hamilton here
The politics are absolute shit. But the production is good.
At some point, complaining about the camera work of "Triumph of the Will" is baby-brained.
And if the production was bad it wouldn’t be nearly as powerful as propaganda

Not sure I heard that one was it in the second act? I'll give it a listen, I'm always willing to have my mind changed.
I mean, the politics is all still crap.
He literally makes Disney music
Catchy does not 1:1 mean good though.
Its a leading indicator.
That is why the ketchup song is the greatest song ever
Its definitely up there

I agree with you and I hate Hamilton with a burning passion and want to personally throw Lin-Manuel Miranda off of a high ledge
