Of course coffee is staying - it's become a lower risk performance enhancing drug employees need in order to function in these fucked up conditions. I love the stuff, but it's amazing to see such a small pleasure so exploited and presented as a benefit.

Amazon is famous for being the only tech company that pays software engineers top salaries but offer literally no tech company perks. They only have free coffee and bananas

The ironic thing about the bananas is that they're not even exclusive for the employees, anybody can walk up to an Amazon banana stand outside in Seattle and get one

Amazon CEOs HATE this one trick for unlimited bananas!

Make everyone disgruntled, but keep the communal coffee, so the most disgruntled people have somewhere to put the poison. :very-smart:

Step one: Force all remote workers to commute

Step two: Remove compensation for commuting costs

Step three: Reintroduce company towns for tech workers?

Problem now is a lot of the remaining workers at twitter are immigrants on a work visa. California is an "at-will" employment state, meaning employers can fire workers for anything except things that relate to collective bargaining from an established union. Really easy to get fired for unionizing, because they employer can just claim it's for a different reason. Then you don't have a work visa and have to leave the country. Only option there is suing in a federal court.

Even if they get unionized now and the paperwork goes through, the NLRB can't legally do anything if a work visa is revoked from an immigrant.
