Esteban Ocon's family lived in a trailer apparently, to save the money needed to get him into racing. Bottom line is that it requires a considerable investment to get on the path to an F1 seat, so even in Lewis Hamilton's case, his parents bought him go karts and whatnot.

I remember as a kid I really loved watching F1 thanks to my father who has always been a fan (fuck current F1 though, I would rather watch the sun slowly torch my corneas), had small toy F1 cars I would play with all day, would collect any posters, stickers and pictures of pilots and cars I could get my hand on, etc. I also remember the day my father told me in no uncertain terms that we were too poor and they could never get me started on motorsports.

I hate how dominant he is since it just gets boring how much Mercedes wins. That said if anyone has to be so dominant I'm glad it's a driver from a working class family. Very tough sport to get into if you don't come from money.
