it feels weird to be excited about a blockbuster after years of slop. even if they end up not being that good i’m glad big studios are (seemingly) trying to make an actual movies made by actual people again, even if it is capeshit.
as a comic fan though grant morrison’s batman run being inspiration (my favorite comics ever) for their batman, hopeful and optimistic superman, tom king’s supergirl, creature commando cartoon, swamp thing, buddy cop green lantern show, and booster gold all have me very excited

You need to tell stories that don't just pretend to be different genres, but actually are different genres.

At some point, you might even discover that you don't need a super hero protagonist in the story at all
At least James Gunn is funny and seems to understand how writing superhero stuff works
Peacemaker was delightful and The Suicide Squad was a good time

I've liked James Gunn's work and yeah Grant Morrison's Batman is some of the very best. So I'm optimistic as well
I really want to know what they're going to do with that Creature Commandos animated show. It's my understanding that they started out killing Nazis and that this will be a modern reimagening. Peacemaker was pretty blunt in how it felt about KKKlan members and alt-right shit, so it could be a really fun time that reeeaally makes the chuds seethe.
Black Atom was already a step in the right direction, even though it was still far from perfect it felt good watching him smoke all of those blackwater stand ins occupying his country and oppressing the people
That's one of the reasons I was already getting this vibe from DC before reading this, they seem to actually be interested in asking the question "What is a hero, what is a villain and how is that a reflection of society and existing power structures?:society:
By definition a hero upholds the status quo and a villain challenges that same status quo regardless of morality
Good people who challenge the existing power structures are by definition villains, until the moment the revolution is successful that is, at which point they become heroes of the revolution
Marvel may pretend to ask these questions occasionally but their answers are always wrapped up in neoliberal, end of history, anti-communism bullshit beneath a rainbow mask because that's what Disney wants them to say

I barely knew who he was before Thanos killed him and I didn't care about that so why would I care about any of this? Oh and his face in the black and white scenes looked like blackface, that was fucked up
Disagree on wandavision, despite its overhyped nature, but lol at Black Adam- I had an alright time at the movies, but damn I'm glad Rock has to endure hubris for once in his goddamn life. Especially after doing 'rise and grind' shit for that long.
So bizarre that Black Adam and Suicide Squad (the good one) both did wonderful commentary on US hegemonic foreign policy- after Falcon and the Neoliberal soldier series Marvel have wisely decided their realm is goofy space
One of the 4 or 5 superhero movies I have seen was the first Wonder Woman and it was clear they wanted to make a totally different movie that got forced into the most generic possible comic book movie template midway through production.
It's obvious they wanted to examine the industrialization of murder created by the First World War and make the battle scenes actually quite realistic. But then you end up with Wonder Woman and Male Lead Guy iterally circling around back to back punching guys who are running toward them one at a time. Just copy pasted choreography from some other movie fight that had 2 weirdos in costumes instead of 1.
There was such a setup of contrasting this disciplined yet naive amazonian warrior culture with the blithe indifference of the world war. Early on they established that Male Lead Guy was pretty cowardly and incompetent, and one of Wonder Woman's first experiences of doubt could have been watching him outpace her slaying of German soldiers using an emplaced Maxim gun. But that exact time frame was written over with super-heroes-punch-minions scenes. Dog shit.
