i almost chopped off the tips of 2 of my fingers chopping wood once. work safe!
Get a mallet. You put the axe on the wood, tap it in, then pound through with the mallet. Works great for when the wood won't stand up on the chopping block. Or when making kindling and the pieces get small and hard to work with.
