Based off Hakim’s recommendation I just watched “Kidnapping, Caucasian style” it was wonderful. Musical numbers, Russian three stooges, and wonderful jokes like an anthropologist getting out of a drunk and disorderly because he studying toasts so it’s an industrial accident not a crime.

It has a mild CW: the kidnapping refers to bride kidnapping but it’s portrayed as criminal and corrupt. Ultimately there’s a happy ending, but thought I’d warn just in case.

I wish my local cops were that cool. "I'm sorry comrade, you took adapting to the local culture too far. Drink this water and remember to know your limits next time."

    absolutely based

under communism no cops, only the societal version of sober sitters who help people avoid mistakes.

I know it used to be real and an anthropology textbook I read once talked about it in the more rural Balkans. Think it’s mostly gone by now though.

Italy used to have it (even a main part of their founding mythology), and it didn't really go away until the Church specifically said any marriage that had it as a part was not considered valid.

it declined greatly during soviet times, but has been occurring more in modern times after it was romanticized in the media. some kidnappings like you describe, and others are actually coercive, where the screaming or crying woman will be isolated in a building where the groom's female relatives will persuade them until she agrees to marry him.
