There simply is no substitute for China's domestic industrial output. There's no way to achieve margin spreads that compete with Chinese imports.

Yeah, it's wild how it's never really talked about. Reading "Who Financed Hitler" now and the book had moments were the author gleefully both sides things between the different nationalist groups and the Marxists. But he spends the entire introduction talking about the places where in Hitler's life where he comes across all these ideas. He quickly moves past the art school stuff because it's really not that important.
