NASA and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) announced the four astronauts who will venture around the Moon on Artemis II, the first crewed mission on NASA’s path to establishing a long-term presence at the Moon for science and exploration through Artemis.

The flight, set to build upon the successful uncrewed Artemis I mission completed in December, will set the stage for the first woman and first person of color on the Moon through the Artemis program, paving the way for future for long-term human exploration missions to the Moon, and eventually Mars. This is the agency’s Moon to Mars exploration approach.

China pls do something.

Is it really going to be exploration or more performative symbolic dabbing?

Disclaimer: I'd be more happy about this if it really was about actual exploration and scientific inquiry without the new cold war veneer and inevitable :porky-happy: characteristics.

Well at least no one already lives there and it'll probably be a few decades until private companies have the capability to fuck up the moon without democratic consensus.

It's not even a reboot of the biggest film of the franchise, Apollo 11 (1969) (directed by Stanley Kubrick). Artemis 2 is a reboot of Apollo 8 (1968), a manned lunar orbit, and it's not even coming out until late 2024.

No need to worry, americans are incapable of colonizing the moon, there's nobody there to genocide and enslave. It simply wouldn't work.

China's plan is to have a base built there by 2028. Wouldn't really worry about 4 people going on a 10 day mission.

Artemis II is planned for November 2024 (which, lol?) atm and will probably get pushed back to 2025 or 2026 anyways so I have faith China will have broken regolith on construction of their base before we've even solidified the launch date

    :sit-back-and-enjoy:

Putting my odds on something between Apollo 13 and Challenger happening before another US Astronaut face plants onto Lunar soil.

Nine months later a lava tube suddenly opens up and tens of millions of fully-formed adult Americans fly out and almost immediately asphyxiate to death

Artemis, at it's core is dumb, making rockets outta old rockets is stupid and a complete waste. Going to the Moon is tight as fuck though.

Gil Scott-Heron had words about this.
