I'll say this. I watched the first Fantastic Beasts movie and it didn't suck. But it also didn't really feel like a Harry Potter movie because it wasn't staring Harry Potter or involving any well-known character for more than a cameo.
Then the writers decided they had to do lots of Harry Potter references, so they made a movie that was absolute steaming cowshit. I have no idea what became of the third movie. But if Wikipedia is to be believed, Warner Bros no longer actually wants to fund new movies because funding things is expensive. So, we'll see...
If the whole trilogy had just a quirky British guy doing conservationism for cryptids it would have been the bomb, but the "serious" plot really dragged it all down. I never even watched the third one because it seemed to have completely abandoned the "fantastic beasts" premise.

Amazing how you can have half the damned movie written for you by way of Deathly Hallows and you still can't help fumbling the ball.

I agree that the first movie was good. Worst part was the gratuitous Johnny Depp cameo reveal.
