Read the room when you're talking. Know your audience. Maybe if you're meeting people for the first time, busting out your knowledge of how being able to accurately calculate catenary curves is critical to some types of civil engineering (such as designing suspension bridges) isn't a great conversation starter.
Remember that body language matters. Often more than what you say.
Little things matter. A small random gift sometimes says a lot more about your feelings than the gift itself.
Be kind to people that are important to your partner. This includes their pets!
