Another now posts anti Muslim stuff on FB regularly. A third is now a full on ecofascist who will just rant about black people like he's my demented grandma.
This has actually been my experience with so-called “independents” in the US. So many of them don’t like the aesthetics of party politics and eschew the partisan labels but veer right whenever possible.

I have never met a "moderate centrist" who erred on the side of the left. When they decide to take a position it is always the conservative position.
