Like they secretly hold mostly right wing views, but they want to hang out with the cool progressives. One of my ex friends blamed Corbyn for everything, even Brexit??? Another now posts anti Muslim stuff on FB regularly. A third is now a full on ecofascist who will just rant about black people like he's my demented grandma.

The Left got a little too PC so I changed all of my opinions about the economy, social issues, systemic racism, health care, and history.

In my limited experience, they were already there but they were coy with their opinions. Sorry to repeat myself, but chuds aren't very fun to hang out with compared to progressives.

"Look i'm not just a feminist, i'm a radical feminist, but when trans people are allowed to exist i have no choice but to side with people who are successfully taking women's bodily autonomy away right fucking now because that's just the only way to save women's rights! You don't know what may happen otherwise, somebody could refer to me as 'person with a uterus' when i don't fight hard enough to narrow the definition of woman down to 'producer of large gametes'."

It’s so absurd and it hurts how much it’s not even a slight exaggeration. This is just how they talk.

Yeah I think Shaun has a good point though, they really are presenting as center-left when they're plain conservative, for instance calling themselves feminist and using a lot of like second-wave feminist language to explain their reactionary behavior. Center-left liberalism has a certain currency especially among upper class women, and yeah it's not true center left from the classical definition of left and right being anti and pro capitalist

I recently learned that during the actual second wave there were a lot, not all, but a lot of radfems that openly, loudly embraced trans women and would shout down proto-terfs and chase them out of their spaces. Even the idea that feminist terfdom is part of the second wave is complicated and distorts history.

Yes, for a long time in America conservative views have been coded as low-status. Speak them and suddenly you're a redneck, and who wants to be on the same side as bucktoothed hillbillies? It's a pity that this shaming tactic is breaking down and people are coming out of the closet as chuds. Shaming is a really good tool to get people to behave when nobody's looking.

no it only works when people are looking. That's how it works

This has actually been my experience with so-called “independents” in the US. So many of them don’t like the aesthetics of party politics and eschew the partisan labels but veer right whenever possible.

it's true with liberals as well. ask them about homelessness and watch them transform into nazis. it's the Ana Kasparian Effect.

She both hates homeless people and went on a "why i'm leaving the left" rant over trans inclusion.

I have never met a "moderate centrist" who erred on the side of the left. When they decide to take a position it is always the conservative position.

Huh. My theory had been that there's something about terf shit that rots your brain and destroys your personality, but maybe they were just shitheads all along and this was what finally made them feel safe to take the mask off.
