He's always been fairly left wing, like during the Obama Admin he published a few left critiques of his foreign policy. But he also works in political consulting which means you have to abandon all of your own beliefs the instant you get hired by someone.
Maybe he's an oddity - a grifter who feels guilty once in a while.
I've heard from former staff members from older Dem campaigns that he has a very "my way or the highway" attitude and doesn't play well with others. This turnaround was quick tho, lol.
