I did a weeklong purge of everything last year to dial in the algorithm and it was pretty ok but the last 3 days it has been just complete trash from recommending reactionaries as well as some guy with 50 views playing a game I've never heard of. Is this just me or did they fuck with something

I just want my 40% music 40% cooking 10% cat videos and 10% random stuff back instead of the mix I have now, I wouldn't mind a cat video that has 100 views but it's literally weirdo anime avatars doing things with like 50 views and I clicked on so many not interested and yet they keep coming it's incredibly strange.

I like that part of the algorithm too. It's a nice change and sometimes i give them a click.

the random <100 garbage you always get at least one of is their attempt at mimicking a thing that tiktok does; new channels on tiktok will get a "grace period" where anything they post gets super boosted so they get enough views and followers to incentivise them to keep producing on the platform

websites like youtube (and twitter before going tits up) had a chicken and egg problem were producing good videos was not enough for the algo to pick you up if literally nobody saw them, which of course they didn't, yours is one of the septillion videos that go up on youtube daily

This is the same A/B testing gimmick that Google and Facebook have been doing forever. The big difference is that some dipshit meme takes a few seconds to digest, while a YouTube video short is going to need your attention for 30 seconds minimum.

The TikTok approach of sub-30 second clips is better for the algorithm and for the Endless Feed, because there's a low risk of you getting bored on any one particular thing. But YouTube is more of a video library than a Clickbait-With-Ads Channel. The model doesn't match up with what the marketers want from them.

The algorithm keeps giving me various troops/veterans content creators. I'll admit that is my own fault since I have a morbid fascination with american military culture and can't help but watch to gain an insight into their horrific worldview.

It's so bleakly simplistic, I once watched one of those guys demonstrate clearing a house, and when he mentioned having killed lots of "bad guys" behind doors, I had to full stop to realize that while this guy was technically an effective troop and also older than me, he was epistemologically still a small child, and that American culture (especially the chuddy religious variety) incentivizes people to adopt this kind of chipper, violent ignorance. The latter was obvious, but I'd never run up against such golden retreiver-brain before.

Unless I know what I'm going in for, I'm not sure why I'd ever visit YouTube.

Music videos, WTYP clips, some FoundryVTT instruction guides... after that, I don't fuck with that shit.

I have suspicions that even if you don't click play, the embeds of youtube videos like on this site, may subtly influence your suggestions. Which is fine for funny shit, but not so great for whatever the latest :brainworms: shit is being posted in the dunktank. Watching the videos in incognito still links them to your IP and does affect the algorithm over time.

YouTube is now putting anything your mouse paused over into your watch history, and it's fucking up my suggestions badly

That might actually be it because I give videos the 2 second hover but also that's so incredibly dumb I hover because I'm not sure what it is and when I don't click through that'd have to rate it super low instead of "show him more of this one times he'll bite"

I don't know about that it tried to recommend me Linus Tech Tips like three times before I did set the channel to ignore, I've never clicked on any tech review videos or any of that sort so I really don't know why it thought to give that to me.

I think over time all of these algos will just get worse and worse. The problem is that the data they use to fine tune the algorithm is always going to be data that has been poisoned by the previous iteration of the algorithm, causing it to just become more self referential over time.

also the algorithms are getting to the point where nobody actually understands how they work beyond having a general understanding. there's totally examples of things getting pushed in the algorithm like that Plastic Love song for reasons nobody really understands.

Sorry I don't watch liberal content, I'll listen to my Deep Dark Berlin Techno Mix and watch some videos of cats doing things and that's it.

TikTok is also weird. The only remotely political content I've interacted with has been following someone posting clips of Parenti talks and liking a David Graeber clip. And what does the algorithm give me based on these inputs? — Jordan fucking Peterson.

I still can't believe I never get right wing recs. I used to get the occasional daily wire ad but I kept reporting them for terrorism/CP. I guess it worked.

It used to be pretty good after I purged like everything last year full on a week of just blocking stuff but it's coming back now I get weird youtubers/twitch streamers that I've never heard of but just based on the video titles and the small preview I know reactionary hog. And these aren't like big channels I've pretty much rooted them all out it is videos with like 5k views, or it's some american news station. even though the algo should know that I'm not american so yeah just weird.

I mentioned and vaguely described a video I saw, in a Hexbear comment, without linking to it or rewatching it, and 20 hours later that exact video from a series with hundreds of very similar videos showed up in my YouTube recommendations. No other videos from that series have shown up in my feed for months, and it was not close to the most popular video from the series. It was definitely chrome reading my inputs.
