To be fair, a lot of leftists uncritically take the side of the anti-American part of a geopoliitcal situation without accounting for any of the nuance that post-modern reality necessitates. For example, there are too many leftists that "critically" support Russia's invasion of Ukraine and openly cheer when Russia suceeds (i.e., capturing Bakhmut) despite the fact that the Wagner Group is indisputably tied to fascist/neo-nazi elements and Russian troops have committed scores of war crimes, executions of POWs, and killings of civilians.
You are using moralistic reasoning. I don't support Russia against NATO because of their moral purity, I support it because it seeks, for purely selfish reasons, to promote multipolarity and oppose western hegemony. I don't like the Taliban either, but it's better for them to be in charge of Afghanistan than the US and its lackeys, because only from a starting point of national sovereignty can progress be made.
hey some of us just don't want Russia to collapse and be colonized by NATO but could care less about any "gains" it makes. also secretly hope this is politically disruptive enough (but not too much) to fragment the United Russia coalition after Putin dies/resigns and allows the communists to form a majority government somehow
This is thrown around as an accusation a lot more than it actually happens.
I mean I've seen some pretty terrible takes from self described anti-imperialists of course. It happens. Some people were jumping to label the Iran protests an op from like day fucking 1 and it was stupid as hell.
But its not as much of a thing as you're making it out to be basically.
