W MEN

In a stand-up comedy performance released as a Christmas 2021 Netflix special titled His Dark Material, Carr said that a "positive" of the Holocaust was the genocide of thousands of "Gy***s" by Nazi Germany.

    [CW: animal abuse]

I got this on my feed too. I have a bunch of ad blocking, cookie blocking, and other shit that blocks personalization stuff on websites so I get to see the horrible shit a fresh youtube recommends. Highlights include "women being humiliated" style videos, shock content involving animals (live feeding videos, deformed animals, hurt animals, etc), Jordan Peterson, sigma grind set shit, gross shit like pimple popping, lots of SEO face and Mr. Beast, Christain conspiracy videos about ancient aliens and shit...

Youtube is horrible. A cognigohazard. It's bad, folks.

Personally, I think it's intentional to make people want to turn on personalization features and stop blocking their algos.

I watch nothing but first thought, gerald horne, and videos of people (not journalists) either visiting China or living there, so my feed is fine.

Bud Lite used to be the working man's beer. It's noble of them to take a huge loss like that just to promote something healthy. /r/hailcorporate

You really have to use Youtube's subscription services and like feature. When you start liking things, you get more of them. When you subscribe to channels, you go to your subscriptions list and find out what delightful creations have been prepared for you today. If you're logged out...well yeah you're going to get a bunch of random crap.

It's actually pretty cool how "the algorithm" will dig up things you might like. I've found some really good channels that lack discoverability. 500 subscribers, totally specialized in what I like. It's how I found this channel , which is just marvelous. Or this one, which doesn't update often but when it does it's super interesting, and if you're not subscribed you'll either miss when they upload or forget about them since it's been so long.

You don't "give" them data. It's an exchange. You're not getting ripped off, you get their services which are not useless. For example, I just got recommended this video , which is right in my wheelhouse. I have a fascination with disaster stuff, and the creator is some dull safety regulatory agency which I would never ordinarily be interested in. But this video is awesome. It is well-produced, interesting, explains exactly what went on and why according to the final report, and I would have never found it if not for liking and subscribing to other channels.

An exchange on their terms following the rules they wrote which arranges and incentivizes the creation of information according to their financial and material interests.

Well, you're certainly free not to participate if you don't want. Have fun with your random homepage of weird videos instead of following all these awesome creators and having tons of free entertainment. It's better than any streaming service because it's all done by people. The "you" in Youtube.

I don't think the ability to personalize your page makes the fact that the default homepage is feeding people this shit any better.

Youtube shapes the public sphere whether I watch it or not. I am not free to withdraw my participation from the corporate hegemony over the flows of information in society.
