The idea of having a fully independent kid after they turn 18 only started after America hit the jackpot post wwii, where you could get a job with a firm handshake, and it’s an entirely unsustainable system.
I don’t think it’s unsustainable for parents to not have to support their children after 18 - Because we should have robust society wide support systems so no parents should be struggling to “support” their children of any age.
