Weren't these assets willed to the USSR after the mass death incident? Who here knew that Jonestown received regular visits from Soviet embassy staff? And that a precipitating event for the deaths was the fact that an airlift of Jonestown residents to Soviet territory wasn't going to happen? https://jonestown.sdsu.edu/?page_id=35388

I was listening to the death tape one night, as you do, when my ears perked up when one of the residents mentioned an airlift to "Russia". That sent me down a three-day rabbit hole. When I emerged I had learned a lot and was surprised there were such links between Jonestown and the Soviets. Memo: S/M – The U.S.S.R. – Possible Settlement Locations, Geography and Climate

Some theories indicate Jones was likely being controlled by Feds stemming from dirt related to being a sex addict. Perhaps the temple was playing off both sides of the Cold War to some degree as well.

When you add in the whole Operation CHAOS stuff that was going on at the time, it surely would fit the mold quite well.

Jonestown was an experiment in Utopian socialism, so it's not far fetched that they they had contacts with the USSR. Before their move to Guyana and the tragedy, Jones was pretty mainstream, like a typical church that did plenty of charity work with the impoverished black community. The quick and sudden downward spiral to murdering a US official and mass suicide is very bizarre.

It's amazing how many people don't know this. I thought Jonestown was just a crazy Christian cult. But Jones got an award from the city of San Francisco!

"We loaded up all 13 of our buses with maybe 70 people on each bus, and we had those buses rolling nonstop up and down the coast into San Francisco the day before the election," recalled Jim Jones Jr. "We had people going from precinct to precinct to vote. So could we have been the force that tipped the election to Moscone? Absolutely! Slam dunk. He only won by 4,000 votes. I'm sorry, but I've got to give my father credit for that. I think he did the right thing. George Moscone was a good person; he wanted what was best for San Francisco."

The Temple is best known for the events of November 18, 1978, in Guyana, when 909 people died in a mass suicide and mass murder at its remote settlement, named "Jonestown", as well as the murders of U.S. Congressman Leo Ryan and members of his visiting delegation at the nearby Port Kaituma airstrip. The incident at Jonestown resulted in the greatest single loss of American civilian life in a deliberate act prior to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

    well that's an interesting factoid

this shit is so fucking wild:

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, while he [U.S. Congressman Leo Ryan] investigated, the United States Department of State "repeatedly stonewalled Ryan's attempts to find out what was going on in Jonestown" and told him that "everything was fine".
