A good rule of thumb for dating is if you're trying to mathematically justify it, they are too young.

i don't think that's how the "rule" is applied? it's usually meant like "don't X" not "within X is OK" which is a little different

Anyone more than 2 years younger than me is incredibly cringe and has too much energy. If you don't go "oof ow oof oooh my knees" when you bend over to pick something up I don't want ya.

bit idea: someone who keeps to this rule no matter how old they get, so that the 100 year old is rejecting the 98 year olds at the nursing home

I think it puts you up against a weird line for the short period where it's relevant. If you use the rule anytime between like 25-40, you're just gonna feel like you're dating a child and that's weird. Technically nothing wrong with it, but I just don't understand how you'd relate. Once all parties are above like late 20s or early 30s, its whatever and who cares.

the magic of the rule is that the gap widens with the age of the 2 parties. Yes at some point it turns from "chomo shit" into "almost chomo shit" and then finally into "wow that's weird but not evil, just really weird"

idk, depends what age you are. I'm 23 and I would not date an 18 year old. Them motherfuckers are either still in high school or just barely out of high school. They're children and adults who want to fuck them are pedos, I don't care what the law says.

Just ran the math and I would personally not date a 23 year old. I honestly think life stages are the most important thing vs the age gap in a vacuum. Like later-mid-20s and onward to me is "firmly an adult" even if there are def experiential differences that can crop up.

i think it's an ok rule of thumb, but when the younger partner is ~25, they can do what they like and it's no-one else's business tbhshrug-outta-hecks

        fair
there are edge cases like that, but in general i think it still mostly works as a guideline

Honestly I think it works better around that age than it does at a younger age, because it at younger ages it feels a lot more borderline and weird. A 25 year old dating a 19 year old seems less weird than a 19 year old dating a 16 year old

It's not the worst rule but it should be done in combination with

"do you or the majority of people you age consider people this young to be essentuially children" A 24 year old dating a 19 year old is weird because of the amount of growing up you do in that time period

also if you are closer in age to their parents than you are to them that's also a red flag

I mean that depends on other factors as well. The 24 year old may have never matured and just lived off a trust fund and was a frat bro whereas the 19 year old may have been working a part time job while attending community college.

Like all rules, you bend it to get a good result. Like if it lands on 17, maybe push that up to a year and get 18 instead lol. It’ll save you time in the slammer and saying “I was just following the rules saul-stare “ won’t work in court
