I don't know about racism but that was shockingly rude. I haven't played many recent Japanese games (I don't count the MGS series, mega man games, first three fatal frames or first three silent hill games as recent) outside of the 'souls' series, so I don't know how accurate the excessive tutorials comment is, but there had to be a more civilized way of conveying that idea. You'd think these people had never talked to real human beings before (then again, this is how people talk on chat threads. I wouldn't be surprised if he was talking like this because he maybe isn't very socialized and talks more to people on the internet than face to face).

He names Darksouls specifically as handholdy and low-tech, when the big video games in the west had been 90% grey and black/cover shooters for 5 years, and was just getting into everything needs to be an open world with repetitive content.

My brain cannot even get past that to process the rudeness and racism.

i hate to um actually ☝ 🤓 but A: it wasn't phil fish making that particular comment and B: they were using dark souls as an example of something that wasn't handholdy

Dark “here’s a broken sword now go fight an Asylum Demon in the first five minutes” Souls is handholdy? The fuck?

Activision had to tell FROM specifically to put tutorials in Sekiro because they hadn’t done it in their games up to that point.

tbf the intended new-player answer to that encounter is to fucking run and come back with a real weapon. DS1 is more about mind games and intimidation than actual difficult (though kalameet is kind of fucked)

Nah, he was completely full of shit even back then. The main issue is that all of their criticisms applied as much to Western games as Japanese ones. They're both equally handholdy, and it's obvious why they do that. It's to attract a wide audience who aren't no-lifers with 20000 hours of experience playing videogames. We're talking about entire games like COD with the whole single player is just a tutorial for the multiplayer lmao
