I'm always delighted when my flowers attract a less stereotypical visitor! This shiny bugge has been around for a couple of days sipping that nectar
Japanese beetle? They're cute, but eat rose-family plants voraciously! They are an invasive species
You might find these covering every inch of the plants soon if their predators haven't made it to the area yet.
Ooh I hope not. But all my roses are invasive too, so oh well.
They can also kill trees if they get out of control, so it's not just the matter of having to replace some perennials.
You can use a spray bottles with very soapy sudsy water - if you get the bubbly suds on their bellies it apparently prevents them from breathing.
Bag a bug doesn't hurt them, the hormones attract them, then they fall into the bag and don't bother to fly out.
Also leave it up until you don't get any for a year, since they emerge from the grass.
It's not just roses, there's tons of plants they'll decimate.
Bagabug takes care of 'em.
How confident are you with that identification? Here's another angle:

I learned relatively recently a fun : magnolia trees evolved before bees did, so they had to rely on beetles for pollination
I think they'd also have relied on other types of fly as pollinators too, surely. Flies have been around since before the dinos.
