I've seen a couple failed gun attempts and would never use one for that reason. The face is the crumple zone of the brain. It exists to use non-necessary tissues as a meat shield. You can lose the whole thing and as long as I can get a tube down what's left of your throat or make a new one you'll technically survive and probably be cognitively intact. You might never taste or smell again, you might have no mouth and the constant need to scream, you might lose your eyes and be unable to load another gun, but we're really good at ensuring what's left of you will survive.
If he went under the chin, it's going to probably blow off most of his jaw/tongue/nose/eyes. Major neuropathy, possible blindness, loss of taste/smell/speech, maybe eating if not breathing through a tube. If he shot from the side and it just went too forward, the frontal lobe is the person part of the brain that's scrambled with lobotomies. You just lose your personality, executive function/impulse control, muscular control, and learning/memory. Either way his quality of life is probably going to plummet without anything more than cosmetic solutions available.
