Confession Time: I love Junji Ito and will definitely watch this but.. I don't think I've ever found any of his stuff actually scary. Creepy for sure, but I never walked away from any of his stories with any uneasy feeling. Maybe manga/anime just isn't the right medium for me to be creeped out, because a lot of horror movies have worked. I mostly appreciate Ito for the great art and how good he is at using that art to create an eerie mood.
For me, his stuff is kinda like H.P. Lovecraft's, in that what's unsettling are the concepts explored in the stories and how they relate to the metaphors/allegories they are (and where Ito beats Lovecraft is that at least his monsters don't boil down to allergories for miscegenation). I think the term used is Cosmic Horror.
And yeah the guy can draw some absolutely unhinged stuff in gruesome detail.
Manga/anime's aesthetics don't really lend themselves well to horror in general- I remember this old Mother's Basement video about that. Anime can do psychological horror decently well tho- I think the only anime I ever found actually scary were the original Higurashi and the first episode of Gakkou Gurashi (School Live).
Oh god they're going to do an Amigara Fault episode aren't they oh god
I don't think so actually, as far as I understand it this show is going to adapt just Uzumaki and nothing else
I'm completely unfamiliar with this, the black and white is certainly novel, the facial expression bit looks great.
But for me at least the 3D CG animation is quite obvious, if you care
-The walking looks off to me, specialy the long distance shot.
-The way she lifts her head and stops suddenly twice @1:55s.
-Lack of lip syncing @0:12s
But then all of these are good/excellent
-the first exchange right at the start, the way she turns her head is quite excellent 10/10
-Her both eyes bit
-All of the old guy scenes
-All of the hair animation looks good/great, helps due to black and white too.
Anime and CG is certainly a tough combination, trailers will always pick the best parts and I hope it wont be bad enough for people to notice and get mad.
Otherwise there is nothing "wrong" with it, Land of the Lustrous was a major hit and it is quite amazing and its 3D CG so its not impossible or anything.
I think the CG is mocapped so it looks rotoscoped, and then they cranked the fps down into anime range. That gives a subtle uncanny valley effect, which is just perfect for the source material I think.
That the reception so far has been largely positive in general (where other Junji Ito anime adaptations have failed) is in part probably because every frame looks exactly like a panel from the manga.
Uzumaki is probably my fav. work of Junji Ito so im really looking forward to this.
i have images turned off and i thought this was going to be live action naruto
Anticipation for this and the eventual animation of the last Jujutsu Kaisen arc are literally the only things keeping me alive at this point
