contolism is a political ideology/borderline religion in the universal century timeline of the mobile suit gundam franchise. it was started by zeon zum deikum. its adherents believe that when humanity begins to live full lives in space they will become a newtype of human, and that people should stop living on the earth. though this has some eugenicist and fascist undertones, it also acts as an anti-imperialist ideology, given the earth federation's status as a repressive empire. this meme is using an anti-communist meme template to mock this fictional ideology, by showing the things each in universe leader has done.

the first leader shown is gihren zabi, leader of zeon during the one year war. this war basically started with zeon gassing a colony to death and dropping it onto sydney australia. i mean, i think it was aimed at jaburo but . gihren is an open fascist, who takes being compared to adolf hitler as a compliment and kills his dad for attempting to find a peaceful end to the war

second is aiguille delaz, who after the war leads the remnants of zeon's army to once again drop a colony on the earth. this time it's an empty colony and he's planning on dropping it on jaburo, which is an isolated military installation. still bad, but when you combine those with the fact that the show he's from (0083 stardust memory) is a miserable show where i hate all the federation characters, i was rooting for him to drop the colony. that being said he's still very loyal to gihren so fuck him

third is haman karn. she leads neo-zeon, using the authority of mineva zabi, the last surviving member of the zabi family to gain legitimacy. she's a girlboss who has no real ideology beyond wanting power, but she's more than happy to drop a colony onto dublin, the current capital of the earth federation to try and win the war

then finally we have char aznable. the son of zeon deikum, char kills multiple members of the zabi family as revenge for what they did to his father and his legacy, and then helps found the anti-earth union group which fights against the first of many fascist secret police forces the federation creates. a few years after this he wrangles the remnants of haman karn's neo-zeon to try and destroy the earth federation by dropping 2 asteroids on the earth. char is not a fascist, and at this point earth is mostly just the earth federation with not many innocents left. so in this one instance i personally choose critical support. despite this char is not a truly heroic figure in char's counterattack, he is at best a massive fuckup who let his obsession with amuro (his ex) lead him to hand the federation the victory

Show what char does to fascists

this is what char does to fascists

happy to help! i only started watching gundam less than a year ago, so if this had had anyone from unicorn or hathaway (the 2 big installments of the timeline i haven't seen) i wouldn't have been able to help lmao

sorry for writing so many words about the robot toy commercial

In your defense, it's pretty compelling YA fiction. The toy commercial part is a necessary evil since making animation is really expensive.

so if this had had anyone from unicorn or hathaway (the 2 big installments of the timeline i haven't seen) i wouldn't have been able to help lmao

You're still watching everything in release order, right? Otherwise, you've seen 0079-CCA, so skipping ahead to Unicorn or Hathaway should be fine.

i'm mostly sticking to release order, yeah. it's not a hard rule, sometimes a friend wants to watch stuff that was made later with me and i'm not that much of a stickler

it's pretty good! lots of political stuff that's really interesting, some really compelling stuff going on. if you want to get a feel for the vibe, i'd recommend starting with 0080 war in the pocket, which is only 6 episodes long and is excellent
