Absolutely fitting bad post. Swinging in with a console that was easier to develop for, more powerful than and $100 USD cheaper than the PS2 could have been a KILLER move. But of course Nintendo's commitment to mini DVD bullshit and their typical stubbornness with developers (there are accounts from devs who first saw the Gamecube at Spaceworld/E3 2000 who hadn't received invites or offers to dev for the system) doomed the system.
Also the cube form factor is cute, but the Xbox and PS2 both look closer to hi-fi components and often sat with big A/V systems, so the odd toylike form factor probably did not help.
I never really knew the GameCube was considered a dud because every other kid in my school had one. The only outliers were two kids who had an Xbox.
My dad was very surprised that Toys R Us had a platinum edition console when we went to get one. In retrospect, not that strange that they had lots of stock.
It had some great exclusives like Biohazard Remake, 4, Twilight Princess and Link in Soul Calibur II.
Pikmin is up there for me. Such an odd and charming little game, and one I was able to play with my dad who never showed any interest in vidya before or since. It was too difficult to beat when I was a kid (I got absolutely bodied in The Distant Spring and couldn't make a fast enough recovery to beat the 30 day timer), but coming back as an adult I really appreciate how refreshing it still feels all these years later. Still need to play Twilight Princess though.
And I was actually just playing Soul Calibur II yesterday! Link is up there, but Cervantes has gotta be my favorite. I just love how over the top all his lines are ("Come with me to hell!", "Your soul makes a poor meal!") and the weight of his attacks, and as someone who sucks ass at fighting games he had a few easy moves I could spam.
I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:
Twilight Princess had a simultaneous release on the Wii iirc
Classic console with such great games like Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle or Sonic Heroes and who could forget Sonic Mega Collection with such great games like Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles and of course Sonic 3D Blast.
Not a single one of those isn't better on another platform, often released prior to the Gamecube
Yeah, but they are all in one place.
Also the GC version of Heroes is the best version.I was gonna say you didn't mention Heroes dangit Xbox Heroes for life!!!!!!
To be real though who wants to play 2D sonic games with that joke of a d-pad? Also the Sonic Adventure ports are affronts to the senses c:
I remember the analog stick and buttons on this being some of the nicest on any system.
mine broke about three years before the ps3/360/wii cycle from that faulty disc reading laser.
replacing the component was slightly-harder-than-trivial but doable, and most boutique repair shops would do it for parts and labor, but i never got it repaired. Oh well. I already had a ps2 because of the dearth of titles by then, it was a loss i felt, but not that badly.
