I still can't comprehend that he still has a career as a "populist" Republican after Hillbilly Elegy. People forget that the entire point of that book was that he was trying to start his political career by appealling to right-wing Liberals and the point was "look how backwards these people are and how they brought the economic suffering on themselves with opiates and racism" and he was trying to tell liberals that they don't need to appeal to or feel bad for people in Appalachia or the Rust Belt.

”look how backwards these people are and how they brought the economic suffering on themselves with opiates and racism"

That is essentially the same thing Trump thinks, so kind of fitting in a way.

Americans have the memory of goldfish. I had someone tell me they like how genuine he is, they've completely forgotten him being never-Trump and getting dunked on for kissing Donald's ass and begging for help to get his seat.

They could have stood together to announce it on stage, eyepatch and earpatch. Two great flavors together at last.

At the very end of my liberal phase, when I still listened to the BBC and the like, before JD Vance became a politician, I read Hillbilly Elegy. I'll see myself to gulag now.

Even worse, Trump is going to live just long enough to say something mildly critical of the actual "American Hitler" that starts rising to power after the Trump/MAGA split, and all the history books will use it to frame him as a moderate reformer and an example of great leadership

He kinda fits as the logical synthesis of Pence's blandness/obsequious nothingness and the post-J6 rile up the rubes, neo-paleocon isolationism but also crypto white nationalist trajectory of the Republicans.

I thought for awhile that Tim Scott made the most sense as an appeal to being both a relative nobody that'd never upstage Trump and appeal to the religious right and the "Trump's not racist, he has a black VP!" contingent of squishier center-right self identifying Republicans that are looking for an excuse to throw their weight behind Trump that might've sat out 2020 or voted for Biden because of something uncouth Trump said, but that was before the debate debacle and near assassination.

He has it in the bag now and just wants a compatible ideologue that'll never outshine him and will always kiss his ass. It makes perfect sense and completely sucks ass.

      neo-paleocon

Uh this is inherently contradictory lol.

Just say fascist or neo-Nazi. That is what those people are.
