It was kinda the prototype for culture war and also commodified music like never before. Distract people with music, then divide people along those lines. The "hippie" stuff was a divide and conquer tactic used to move discussion from "hey, why are we in these wars?" To "these stupid drugged out Beatles hippies suck, and they hate the war, so the war must be good!".

Plausible, although it seems more likely that a lot of hippies were just plain-old libs. What's more lib than trying to chant away the rain? Plus, we know the top-down "conspiracy" around hippies was to create the War on Drugs to delegitimize and criminalize them.

I don't think there was like a CIA dude puppeting them or anything, but they were definitely dealing with intelligence agencies through the proxy of their label.

The war in drugs stuff was the cover, if they weren't a threat, they wouldn't have needed to do it. It have them the ability to create thousands of political prisoners and bust movements with the tacit consent of the populous.

That divide festered and became a cultural touchstone over the next couple generations. Not that it wasn't there to begin with, it was built on the existing racism in america. They just managed to get the racists to associate way with being good for racism and peace with anti-white plots.
