I think it's worthwhile to point out that there have been a few opportunities since Roe where the Democrats controlled the government, but for SOME REASON chose not to purse federal legislation that would have secured abortion rights should Roe ever be overturned. I guess they just never got around to it...

I mean in a roundabout way the article has a point - Democrats avoid abortion legislation because they think it will alienate white Evangelicals who NEVER vote for them anyway.

        Republicans have abortion.

        Democrats have gun control.

They're both issues where you can very neatly divide the population in a manner that brokes absolutely no room for compromise. And you can charge at the issue over and over again, knowing the courts won't ever give you a clear and final victory, but that you'll always have a vocal base of support coming back to you for another round.

The filibuster makes it easy for Republicans to block any legislation that addresses abortion. Getting rid of the filibuster lets Democrats address it directly

      Paid to lose™

Seriously though, they're probably doing exactly what the key DNC capital backers want them to.

It's like a (american) football team down by 3 with 2 minutes left and running out the clock on themselves. Can you imagine being a fan of a team that sits on their own balls every chance it gets

The Women's March in DC marshalled 3 million women into the lawn of the capital to celebrate Hillary's inauguration protest Trump's Presidency.

I have to wonder... why not put out the call and bring them back in. Occupy Capital Hill. Do all those obnoxious things that liberals love to do. Shut down Congress by the sheer mass and magnitude of angry white women storming through the corridors of power. Have every pro-Barrett Senator holed up in their offices, afraid to come out. Hell, with COVID still rampant, this threat would be twice as effective.

Democrats could do this. They could ring the alarm and send forth their heralds - their Oprahs and Ellens and Michelle Obamas - to raise a literal army of women to protest this.

        But they don't.

I don't think it's because they want to lose. They'd be happy if McConnell tripped over his own dick and failed to push Barrett through. But they don't want to turn into that kind of party. The kind of party where people start seeing themselves as part of a larger ideological project. A massive national community, even. And start demanding things in a way that a massive number of political activists have successfully done for generations.

Democrats don't want another Civil Rights movement. They just want you to vote. And then they want you to go the fuck home and ignore them for two years.

Because they don't care about winning lol. Its kinda cute that people still think they're losing. They're not losing homie, they're winning. They get more donations and they don't have to do anything. Who the fuck are you going to vote for? The Cheeto party? Now gib donation and voot

The article is saying that Democrats should address abortion access with legislation, which is not something that has really been tried before. The filibuster makes it real easy to block any such legislation but at least now there are talks of removing it

This actually plays into the Democrats actual goals.

They will be able to ignore anything the left wants or any needed progress. To re fight a half century old fight

The argument that the left has already lost the abortion fight reflects the fact that there’s no abortion clinic in 90 percent of American counties. This is the result of the highly successful death-by-a-thousand-cuts anti-abortion strategy, which has piled on restriction after restriction to make abortion inaccessible to as many American women as possible.

So what should we do now? Often forgotten is that R.B.G. herself had decided that Roe was a mistake. In 1992, she gave a lecture musing that the country might be better off if the Supreme Court had written a narrower decision and opened up a “dialogue” with state legislatures, which were trending “toward liberalization of abortion statutes” (to quote the Roe court). Roe “halted a political process that was moving in a reform direction and thereby, I believe, prolonged divisiveness and deferred stable settlement of the issue,” Justice Ginsburg argued. In the process, “a well-organized and vocal right-to-life movement rallied and succeeded, for a considerable time, in turning the legislative tide in the opposite direction.”

This makes sense. Abortion access currently sucks, use legislation to improve it. Pass federal laws to stop states from banning it

become addicted to not having a spine.

I've tried, didn't work had to get it fused, 0/10 will never do again.

But on a more serious note it's because the USA is a one party state and the democrats are controlled opposition that will always compromise and conform before taking a stand on anything.

Their complete willingness to abandon progressive women in the hopes of picking up a few evangelicals is so fucking disgusting
