The fact this man is our ambassador to Japan is embarrassing. You should see him try and speak the language. It's cringeworthy even if you don't know Japanese. Unfortunately, I can't find a video of it. To put it this way, he spoke while giving an award at the May 2024 Sumo Tournament. He was summarily ridiculed.
My point being is that he doesn't know the language at all and someone with familiarity with the local language should be ambassador.
