I think the point of calling everyone on the left an anarchist isn't necessarily only to create a bogeyman but to continue building on the completely incoherent understanding of political ideology that they have already created in 90% of Americans. If they correctly differentiated between communists and anarchists or whatever, it would be detrimental because it would actually help Americans get a foothold in terms of politics and not be continuously slipping and sliding around with their own beliefs. And of course they want to mask the fact that there is actual organizing that is done by people on the left by labeling it all as 'anarchist' which of course they define as "aimless and disorganized".
Propaganda really feels like mental terrorism against people's understanding of reality.
