I have said this twenty times before and I'll keep saying it: it doesn't matter what your ideology actually is - you will be cast as an anarchist if you're on the left. they will not differentiate.

what liberals think anarchism is, in the capital L Liberal sense of the term. they're mostly reactionary at this point so they're going to sound pretty right wing but that's the hegemonic ideology.

and to them, it mainly means revolutionaries who oppose the state and choose to incite or participate in confrontational, mass direct action against the state - something that absolutely every communist should be willing to engage in as it's what sets us apart from liberals in the first place.

to the fascists, it just means undesirables who become so because of their politics. they mean the white people who have turned traitor to their race by joining with the enemy.

to put this in perspective, the federal government is trying to build RICO charges against demonstrators by claiming BLM is an anarchist organization and its on that basis that people are being held right now. the actual organizations people belong to doesn't matter in the face of the grand narrative the state is trying to construct. (I don't know how well-known that is - I've gotten that information by talking to people who were arrested.)

be very sure that forum/social media posts will be used in court cases to "prove" that people are anarchists in the liberal sense and that as much as we fight to build a better world, right now we need to do it to avoid prison, the camps, and worse.

the new red scare isn't over secret communists - it's over secret anarchists. that doesn't mean much as it's just a way to justify what they will do to us.

To the basic lib it means anyone with a bandana on their face spray painting circleA and smashing windows for no reason.

The the fascist it means anyone on the left of Biden.

We're not just anarchists, but a specific tendency within anarchism that comes from italy in the 70s.

I think the point of calling everyone on the left an anarchist isn't necessarily only to create a bogeyman but to continue building on the completely incoherent understanding of political ideology that they have already created in 90% of Americans. If they correctly differentiated between communists and anarchists or whatever, it would be detrimental because it would actually help Americans get a foothold in terms of politics and not be continuously slipping and sliding around with their own beliefs. And of course they want to mask the fact that there is actual organizing that is done by people on the left by labeling it all as 'anarchist' which of course they define as "aimless and disorganized".

Propaganda really feels like mental terrorism against people's understanding of reality.

Most people don't even know what anarchism is (I'm not an anarchist). They just think a thing that seems edgy and punky and is anti-authority (of any kind at all but especially dads and cops!) is anarchist, and that the ultimate goal is chaos ie anarchy.

Kinda late to comment but holy shit this article is bad. They cite Andre Taylor in Seattle, a guy who is working directly for our centrist lib mayor that is deeply opposed to meaningful reform, as some guy who was sidelined because of some random white anarchist. Like holy shit, it's honestly disgusting that anyone who considers themselves remotely leftist would ever write a biline for the nytimes as this paper seriously needs to lose its legitimacy.

Literally the most prominent black activist in the entire city, and former candidate for mayor, has called out this dude multiple times as basically just being cointelpro.
